Ms. Amin-Giwner received her B.A., cum laude, with honors from Brandeis University in 1995 and her J.D., magna cum laude, from American University, Washington College of Law in 1998. She is admitted to the Bars of the State of Maryland and the State of New York, the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. Ms. Amin-Giwner has concentrated in the litigation of shareholder and unfair employment class actions in both federal and state courts throughout the country.
Ms. Amin-Giwner is co-lead counsel in Friend, et al v. The Hertz Corporation, Case No. RG 07344896 (Cal. Super. Ct.) in which argument was held before the United States Supreme Court on November 10, 2009, concerning the test for determining a corporation's principle place of business for purposes of diversity jurisdiction. She is also co-lead counsel in In re Laureate Education, Inc. Shareholder Litig., Case No. 24-C-07-000664 (Md. Cir. Ct), who successfully briefed and argued an appeal of the trial court's dismissal of the case to the Maryland Court of Appeals on an issue of first impression in Maryland: whether shareholders can bring direct actions against a company's board of directors for breach of fiduciary duty. Ms. Amin-Giwner was also a part of the litigation team in In re Vivendi Universal, S.A. Sec. Litig., Civil Action No. 02-cv-5571 (RJH) (S.D.N.Y.), that was successfully tried to a verdict by a jury after a 12 week trial.
